My grand father had a wire cage that he would lower over the side of the boat. He would put about 7 or 8 minnows in it. Then he would fish around or under the cage. Always came home with crappie. Did he know something?
recently i have heard talk about soaking soft plastics in game fish attractant in crawfish flavor does this work well and if so what scent works best also has anyone ever heard of keeping minnows in a wire tube like a cricket tube so the cal release a distress signal to attract game fish??

I soak my plastics in vanilla flavor and garlic salt. Works as well as store bought. Interesting idea on the wire cage setup. I may have to tinker in the garage and come up with something. I have heard of them being submersed in a plastic mayo jar with holes poked in it. Probably same premise. Crappies are so upset about not getting to those in the mayo jar that they eat the free swimming minnow you present to them out of aggravation.

I've been told to soak your plastics in cod liver oil. It's suppose to do the same thing as the vanilla extract. I need to try both and see which one is best. I'll get back to you on that!!
That will work too. You can always mix up a "Gumbo stew" for your soft plastics:Originally Posted by FishingDog

If you are gonna use scent try crawfish. I was fishing for gills and this guy would dip his night crawler in crawfish scent and always come up with a bluegill. I like to use scents that are natural.
where can you buy crawfish scent at?
Bass Pro Shops. You can order online if you don't have a store near you. Scroll down for selection.Originally Posted by jorilla

I know a good ole boy here in Arkansas who uses cod liver oil on his hair jigs. I do too but not as much as he does and he has consistently out catched me for the past 3-4 years. I think that a natural scent works well.Originally Posted by FishingDog

The 1 1/2' and 2" Yum baits have the attractant cooked in, salted, and are solid bodies. I have used them the last 2 years and really like them. I order from www.crappiepro.com. Good prices, fast shipping.
