If I use minnows, they are the biggest Shiners I can find. 3-5 inches long.

    Talking Minners ?? .....

I use the ones that are "guaranteed" to catch Crappie .... or DIE TRYING :p

Mostly, the minnows I use are Fatheads or Bluntnose ... usually 2-3" long.
    The 3 rigs I use - tightline hook/sinker ... under a slipfloat ... tipping a jighead.

Can't say as I've ever used "creek chubs", and I've never had much luck keeping "shiners" alive for long. I've also had good success using Brook Silversides and Gizzard or Threadfin Shad ... but, they require a dip net or cast net (to catch them with) and a lot more "effort" and "equipment" to keep them alive.

Most of the time I use Rosey Red Fatheads and sometime #4 Shiners. I prefer the small ones no more than 1.5". Either tip them on a jig or on a extra lightwire longshank #6 cricket hook under a slipfloat.

For minnows I like 1.5 to 2.0 inches fished under a slip bobber or Kentucky rig. If I'm fishing an artificial it has to look like a minnow with those same dimensions. I prefer a slip bobber.

You CAN modify your slip bobbers. This thread was by KCBH http://www.crappie.com/gr8vb3/showthread.php?t=19609
and as long as you DO NOT drill into the plastic tube on a slip bobber, you can modify it too. Works great.

I agree with crappiekeith, if you're not in a position to use live bait and you're going to fish a jig the hairjig produces well. Practicing your presentation technique will make it even better.
