    Default First Crappie Ever - A 16-incher!

Fourteen-year-old Ryan caught his first crappie ever while fishing with me yesterday and it was 16-inches long!

He mentioned later in the morning that he really liked crappie fishing so I guess I've "ruent" another one.

The crappie fishing has been a bit tough here lately. Lake Greeson is still nearly at full pool and the surface temps are still in the low 80s so the fish are still scattered up in the creek arms. Usually by now they have moved deeper and started stacking up on points near deeper water but it's been an odd year. I expect the water level to start falling and the surface temperature to rise over the next few weeks and that should push the shad out towards the deeper channels and the crappie will follow.

For those in the Texarkana area we taped a couple shows with the Ark-La-Tex Sportsman Outdoor Show last week - http://www.arklatexsportsman.com/. We did a show on Building and Sinking Bamboo Crappie Condos and one on Slip-float Crappie Fishing. It's not really the best time of year for taping crappie fishing shows but we scrounged up a few. The biggest crappie was right at 16-inches.

One of our Fisheries Biologist, Drew Wilson, (on the left) took the head from the 16-incher and is going to have the "ear bone" analyzed to determine the age of the fish so it will be interesting to see how old it was.

I think Jimmy Houston will have to move over. Give that young man a fishing show and let him tell us how it's done. That is a really nice fish.
