Default Setting the hook using a jig

I like using 1/32 jigs with a #4 hook on it. This year I have been missing some good fish. I don't know if it is the color I'm using and they are short hitting it. Anyhow, when you are fishing a jig lets say 14 inches from the tip, how do you set the hook after the bite? I don't really jerk the pole a certain way to try to set the hook but, I kinda let the fish hook himself. Is that a proper way?

    How do yall do it?

With a 1/32oz jig, You might try taking a pair of pliers and "opening" the hook a bit. Bend the hook downward just past the body, then turn the tip out to give room for a set of lips.
As far as setting the hook, I don't give them buggers any slack. You feel a thump, set that hook! It only takes a flick of the wrist. Kinda like flicken a booger at someone, only use your wrist instead of your finger.

yepper, just a lift of the rod and start reeling, keeping the line tight is key.
NO need to bass set the hook, you'll only leave the fish lipless.

i`m a line watcher, when i see the line jump or feel a twich i give the rod a slight tug and reel and hold on and like everyone said the key is to keep the line tight any slack and the fish is gone.GOOD LUCK...DENNIS

Or, after you get the fish in...then flick a booger on the other person in the boat with you. Or, if you want to practice setting the hook on a fish, sit in your living room and just flick boogers...your wife should understand. Tell her you are practicing crappie fishing. She should understand!

I let 3 good fish in a row come off last week fishin shallow, used a light rod -meaning light in the hand, the actions on all my rods are fast, so I started setting it a little harder & never lost any more, sometimes I think when they are thumpin it our reaction is to not set the hard enough, believing they will hook themselves.......rip that lip!
