Yep eventually they will suck all the juices out of the fish and fish will die. Use to catch some fresh water eels when I live in Virginia.
Sunday, had two fish come in with Lamprey eel things stuck on them -
NASTY looking buggers. They would turn loose in the net. Daughter took
one of them to school in a jar as a present for the science teacher.
First time I ever saw one of these was last July, friend of mine caught
a blue cat with a big one stuck to it. How many of you have "caught"
these things? And I wonder, do they kill the fish eventually? Made a
rough looking wound on the ones we had...

Started looking, found a bunch of stuff like this

does not sound good at all!
Thinking all the years and fish I've seen caught out of Pickwick, never
seen one until last July, then two in one day???

Terrible critters.
Years ago we used to catch them stuck to lake trout by the bushell.
As a matter of fact. We still catch them now and again on lakers and salmon.
I have to say,, our DNR are trying very hard to keep up with them. It takes lots of money to keep them in check.
They darn near cleaned out the lake trout in the great lakes years ago.
I've been up the river during there spawn and it's incredible to watch.
Slitherin SOB's.

Well, if it takes lots of money... we are (how to put it pc?)
scr***d, I'm afraid. Thanks for the reply though!

I had one fall off in the net at Millwood last week. I've seen them there before but never in Texas.

I've caught trout with them on in White River since the early 60's. Never a lot, but not uncommon. I can't tell that they've gotten better or worse over the years. They are different from freshwater eels which have a different kind of mouth altogether.
Have caught fish with Lamprey on them at least twice here at LOZ. They were suckered on to a drum each time.
the trick to catch that finnicky speck....
gently set the hook just before the peck
