What's a "good" cast... distance, that is?

Playing with my new ultralite in the driveway. With a 1/32oz jig head, a bulky tube type jig, 6lb Stren, 6 1/2 UL rod, I'm averaging 40-45' (wind at my back--- 30-35' otherwise. Is this about par?

My first thoughts would be to practice to get the "lure" to land on a target twenty feet or so, then go for distance and accuracy.

Good ideas. I got some 4lb line and an extra spool. Accuracy COULD use some improvement but I just got the new ultralite and wanted to see how far I could toss a light jig.

I'll agree with the accuracy thing.

Set an empty coffee can out there and see if you can put it in the can from 20'. If you can't put it inside the can, see if you can get directly beyond it so you can bump it on the way back.

Accuracy with a jig is more important to hit a target as opposed to using a flashy search bait like fan casting a spinnerbait.

You should be able to do better than that. I can flip a crappie jig 35 feet. First toss the stren. Get a limp thin 4 lb test or a limper thinner 6lb like Gamma or Sufix promix. I'd have to pace off how far I can throw a 1/32 jig but I'm thinking at least twice that far.

Thanks Grizz... I know that distance is usless without accuracy but I just wanted to know what kind of distance a good caster could get with a light jig and a balanced set up. Looks like I have some work to do. Anyone else have any backyard data to share?

Just happened to respool my reel today and stepped off my distance. I got 75' using Fire line (6# with 2# eguiv.) on a spinning reel. This was a 1/16 oz jig without any plastic. This is why I went to a super line.
