This season, baby shad 2" in spring, itty bits in summer, and kicker minnow this fall. All in various colors.
Lots of types of tails....curly, stinger, paddle, slider, carrot, mo magic....the lists goes on...1" 2" ,2 1/2", 3" ? So many brands.
What's the best in any season?
I like the 2" curly tail I spring, and 2 1/2" slab magnet in summer, 2" southern Pro stinger shad in fall

I don't know as there is any "best in any season". I primarily use tubes and stinger tail plastics, year round ... as I mostly cast &/or push jigs. My partners may experiment with other shapes, but more often than not they end up reverting back to whatever I'm using (shape & color) ... especially if I'm catching fish & they are not. (and vise versa, on occasion)

Straight thin tails for all species, anytime, anywhere.
Granted, at times many soft plastic designs work, but on average, few work most of the time. Sassy Shads are my least productive design.
