Grand Lake of the Cherokees, OK

Went down this past weekend. Met up with my cousin. They were renting a place on the Elk River arm away from all the main lake traffic. Got down there Saturday around noon and left about 24 hours later, so...didn't have a ton of time.

Saturday night we just dropped a light off their dock and fished for several hours, hauling in tons of carbon copy white bass (or..Sand Bass, as the call them 'round those parts), a small cat, a few drum and a couple small crappie. And then this one:



Wasn't familiar enough with that lake and there were a lot of stumps you could see (and probably many more that you couldn't!) so didn't feel good about taking the boat out at night. But we did the next day for another couple hours. Trolled cranks and picked up a couple more crappie and a bunch more whites. Mr. Baker's trolling videos don't cover what to do when a sh'load of whites all hit at once! Those don't cooperate and come to the top like crappie. They dive and tangle up the other rods! But it made for some fun times and lots of laughter.

I also boated a small blue cat, and this was right after my cousin got something that just took off like a bat out of hell....pulling line off the reel bout as fast as you could (drag wasn't set right for something that big??) Pulled all the braid off and got to the cheap mono underneath by the time he panicked and grabbed the spool and....*pip*.....gone. The whole ordeal took maybe 10 seconds.

Had to have been a big ol' cat? Maybe a gar? Sure wish we would've at least been able to put eyes on it.

Anyway....still a lot of fun on new water. Weather was great (hot and humid, but...no rain, anyway) and my cousin caught more fish that he expected to, so...Good times. Wouldn't mind going back sometime. It's a beautiful lake and not too far away. All catch and release this weekend.
