"A Cranker's Mixed Double" -- Another Drawing Brought to You by Special K

The popular technique of trolling or "long-lining" for crappies is what inspired my latest drawing that I have entitled "A Cranker's Mixed Double." In this drawing (below) I attempted to capture the facts that crappies by way of their biological makeup make the species best known for their voracious appetites and for pursuing and eating huge amounts of forage fish; well known to suspend in open water and/or move about as necessary to follow schooling forage; and quite well suited for just these types of predatory pursuits and ambushes, even in the open water.



According to an article by Brad Wiegmann and the opinions, writings and posts of many others on our own Crappie.com forum: "Trolling crankbaits for crappies just makes a lot of sense... This is fundamentally true because crappies like to school in open water or on offshore ledges during certain times of the year and often the only way to catch them is (of course) to attempt to mimic the forage fish that they are pursuing and most often this method is accomplished by way of casting, trolling or long-lining."

"[T]rolling certainly isn’t a new technique by any means; tournament crappie pros have been experimenting with trolling lots of different baits for decades; however, (then) they were far more restricted to trolling a wide variety of spinners, jigs and other soft swim baits, which showed these fishers quite remarkable results during these times of the year. While some of these tactics are still widely practiced by crappie anglers even today; some have evolved and later led to the development of crappie crankbaits that dive to various depths, track straight, present naturally in the environment, and come in many awesome crappie catching colors and patterns."
