    Default Ohio River backwaters 11/29/14

My dad and I went fishing in a N. KY creek just off the Ohio on Saturday. I went a few weeks back just before the cold spell and did real good on crappie there. But then the water temps were 57 degrees.

Yesterday - the water temp was a cool 42-43. The fish were moving slow but the bite got pretty good in mid afternoon, also after we realized just how slow we had to move that jig through the brush. Mainly caught them on Lake Fork Baby Shad near the bottom in 15-18 foot of water. We probably ended up with 30 crappie and most were a good size. Probably 10 of them at 11" or more. Last fish of the day for me - and my personal best in 10+ years of crappie fishing - was this white crappie that was just a hair under 14". He was fat and full of shad too. Great day to be on the water.

I got em to good on the big O last thurs. Heading back out in the morning. I got to admit, I never fish more than two or three feet deep all winter. There are lots of nice fish in the river. Lower pressure too

Main river???? Your ****ting me!!!!! Hey tbone, what are the average depths of those creeks (laugherty hogans)?? I have actually been finding fish finally (and you were right about bigguns) but its in creeks with a shallower over all depth. creeks like Eagle creek where the over all depth is really deep I struggle very bad!!!!! There is a pretty good read in the Indiana forum by the way.

I like the creeks and bays a lot, although I've never focused on the main river for crappie. If you don't mind what conditions do you look for on the main. I know below the dams and mouths of creeks hold them. I live near the fossil beds, so I don't take my boat down there. I like to fish for spots on the main during the winter. Just wondering if crappie are in similar areas.

i got to admit, i never fish much more than 3 feet deep all year. No self-respecting crappie will live much deeper.

    Hi Hillbilly
i was fishing Hannah a while back figuring they would be deeper at least 8 ft anyway...ol'boy pulls up and shows me a dozen all caught in no more than two feet deep...

PS: tell your daughter I said, "hi!" haven't seen her at the FF store the last few trips.

    Be safe all!
