Still have one in the basement I want to say is a martin or marlin.. heavy sucker!
I'm looking for opinions on these type reels.
Best, smallest, lightest?
I used to enjoy fishing with one years ago.
I remember it was heavy.

Fin, I'm of the same opinion as you. They are heavy and I don't see the reason for inventing them. Fly reels are mostly for holding extra line except when landing large fish maybe. I got rid of my first one not long after getting it.

when I was a kid my neighbor would take me fishing with his son and daughter. She used an auto fly reel and hardly ever missed a fish, bobber bounce and look out here it comes!snatched those gills right out of the water.

Two things I like about em is when the rod tip is in a tight spot you can set the hook without tangling the line if you miss.
Also when spider rigging setting the hook is faster and easier.

I still have the same Perrine automatic reel I used when I was a kid. It actually still has the same white level fly line on it. I used it on a 9' bamboo fly rod for stillfishing. Yes it is heavy but, it's a great way to save your depth when you find it. I'm thinking about using it on a 7 foot Eagle Claw fly rod, and going fishing the old fashioned way.
Where you go is less important than how you take the steps.
But don't forget the Roadrunners
find an old one . spring steel is not what it used to be . this one is around 50 and going strong . the new martins ,I haven't had much luck with .
I have two that I inherited from my Grandfather. They're put away in storage, as keepsakes. I do remember him using them, tightline fishing for Crappie, and having the fly line and a one foot long mono leader w/hook & sinker .... and would occasionally set the hook by engaging the trigger.
One is a Martin Mohawk, and the other is a South Bend Oren-O-Matic 1126 Model A.
