I think it would work. Years ago I made an "Alcohol stove" out of an old Altoids can with some perlite and some left over screen material. I carried it while hunting or fishing in cold weather. It worked great. The only problem you really could not control the level of flame other than by the amount of alcohol you used. I have been using that to powder paint my jigs with. I will admit though. I got on ebay after reading your question and bought one of the little burners you were talking about.
Here is a picture of the little stove I made.
With this stove you have to add alcohol every time you use it. If you go this route, please BE CAREFUL. Start with a little bit of alcohol and build up to the flame that you like. This is not the safest way to heat jigs up. My stove that is. It was just something that I already had and decided to try and use it.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, I ordered one of the burners. Maybe it will do what i want it to do. If not I'll try something else.
The ones off ebay works but doesn't last very long for my use. The fuel will evaporate because the led doesn't screw on but the led just slides on. Barlow and Jannsnetcraft plus you can find them on ebay at times has a good lamp with a bigger wick and a screw on top for under $20 that will hold up to a lot of use.

The one I have been using since I started tying is the one they have at Barlow's. I didn't like the price at first, but then I bought several other kinds with different wick on one and another with same size, but I quickly each time went back the the one from Barlow's and it's a great size IMHO! I would do it again and again!
