Looks like the guy who was shot was off his meds. Unfortunate for him but thank God the fisherman had a gun to defend himself or this would have been another murder case.

Police say a man who fired a gun as an apparent threat to a group of people with whom he had been arguing was fatally shot when another man got a gun from his truck.

Detective Greg Holland said Derrick Redd, 24, of Pine Bluff, was shot in the head and killed Friday morning at St. Marie's park, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park on the Arkansas River, after confronting a fisherman he didnt know.

Redd had been arguing with people in the park before he went to his car, grabbed a gun and fired it into the air, according to a police report. He then headed toward James Woody, 58, of Pine Bluff, who was unloading his boat.

Woody saw Redd approaching, reached into his truck, grabbed a gun and positioned himself behind his truck for protection, Holland said. Redd chased Woody around the truck and threatened to kill him. Woody turned and shot Redd in the head and killed him, according to police.

"The deceased was actually the suspect," Holland said.

Holland said later in the day that family members told police that Redd was under a doctor's care for mental illness, but had stopped taking prescribed medications.

Prosecutor Stevan Dalrymple said he was still reviewing the case, but he doubted Woody had committed a crime. "I don't anticipate any charges," Dalrymple said.

Woody was interviewed by police and released, Holland said
