I would say 4, take one off if you arent gonna need or just dont use it.
Do you guys recommend the 3 or 4 rod set up? Is 4 overkill or is it better and if you want you can just not use one of them unless you need it. I guess if the extra money is not an issue 4 would be better.

Go with 4....... I have 4 sets of 4 on my boat. Two sets on the front and two sets on the back. Hi-Teks are great rod holders.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

"my wife" crappie fishing is a jerk on one end waiting for a jerk on the other."
pullin they're heads up, ears and all
I have 4 sets of 4 and 2 sets of two that I use when vertical jigging. Got to have somewhere to put the pole in the other hand when you get a hit. Buy extra bases when you order, you'll find you want to have them in different places when you troll, longline, troll cranks and so on. I have 9 bases mounted in my boat.

Two sets of 4, four sets of four would be better.

I prefer spider-rigging and use use 2 to each T-post on front. I feel 4 is plenty and anymore would be a problem handling and fishing productively. I also have the same set-up out back of my boat for pulling. There are so many variables to this type fishing that it can be fun but too much equipment can turn into a Hassle. I prefer keeping simple. Just Sayin. BB
