A slice of white bread will catch all you need. That's all my dad ever used. (Of course, he completely abandoned minnows once he discovered the jig. )
You hear all over the place some strange and simple baits that'll fill the trap and your bucket with minnows. I have heard the usual, saltine crackers, dog food both wet and dry, sour dough, and even styro-foam will work. Currently, dry dog food has been my minnow go-to bait, what do you guys and gals like to use?

I used to catch tons of them with bacon. It works terrific for 'dads too. For 'dads I would cut the top off a 1 gallon milk / water jug, just about an inch above the handle. Bury the jug leaving about 2" or a bit more above the soil. Add bacon to the bottom. I used to weight it with a bit of string tied to the middle and to a rock, but not sure if that is necessary. I know you didn't ask, but just reminded me of the good 'ol days as my jugs would be full of crawdads. I would use the biggen's for cats and the littlens for crappie.
Have a great weekend!

Dog food is good, one of my favorite is old frozen bacon. They can follow the sent because of the fatty oils
i've used cereal with decent results.
i like to use old bread or saltine crackers
There are some 'dads in my creek, i'll have to try bacon for them. I used bread quite a bit as well as saltines when I was younger.
I had a friend that would use cheap dog / cat food for minnows and for chummin brush piles as well. He would go to walmart and ask for the broken / ripped bags. They would give him between 30% and 50% off depending on the tear and how old it was (neither of which matter here).
Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Guy I know uses cheese puffs in a panty hose inside the trap.
The problem with Cheese Puffs, at least for me, is that they would never make it to the water. Who has 2 thumbs and loves Cheese Puffs? Yep, this guy!
