I bought a new 2 1/2 hp Tohatsu about three years ago. Runs great. Only
problem was gas tank neck which was defective. They replaced tank free
    of charge. No problems since.

Living in South Louisiana I run across a number of commercial fishermen/crabbers. I notice a lot of them use Tohatsu engines. They all seem happy with them and say they are durable and dependable.

I think they make all the Nissan motors too. As long as there is a warranty shop near you I don't think there is a reason not to get one.

Nissan and tohatsu are the same motors with diffrent stickers on them. I was going to buy the tohatsu 20hp because i could get it for $200 less than the nissan but they didn't have anymore in stock so they gave me the nissan for the exact same price. Have been using it 2 seasons now with no problem at all. It's a four stroke. I'd recommend either to a friend with no worrys.

I've had a nissan 4-stroke 9.8hp kicker motor on boat for 5 seasons now and not a speck of any problem. Note that Tohatsu is the World's largest outboard motor manufacturer. Mercury is a flea compared to Tohatsu

All new smaller Mercury are made by Tohatsu/Nissan.
