Yep, the fixed speed trolling motors are a pain. If you want to solve your problem without buying another trolling motor, check one of these out. I had one and it worked great. Here is the link.....

Just because I am boat looking/shopping thought I would share my thoughts on 5 speed motors. The one on my pontoon boat is my first 5 speed and I just hate it. I have always had Variable Speed motors and will never again have a 5 speed.
If any of you have yet to buy your first make sure and think about it. Remember you only have the 5 choices with the one I am going to be glad to be rid of. The variable speed motor will let you chose any spot between 0 and 10 so adjusting for the wind of lack of, or any other thing that will restrict movement is much easier.
Any one else have strong feeling about these?
Thanks for allowing my vent.

I agree. Bought a used boat that has a 5 speed on it. Very annoying, works fine but the speed is usually a problem. Plan on changing it when I come back next winter. Do not like to troll but have to at times in Florida. Very little structure and the fish are scattered most of the time.
Seems like no matter what the conditions are, you can never get the right speed with the 5 speed trollers.

I don't really mind the limited speed selection on a 5-speed. The big fault is that they use the same amount of battery power on all 5 settings. The variables are much easier on batteries when it isn't windy and you only need a little nudge to move the boat.
I thought that the lower settings used less battery power. amps.
