Default What Do Wooly Buggers Mimic?

I was tying a couple wooly buggers last night, and I've never thought about what this streamer pattern mimics.

to me it seems like they would mimic a leech after they get wet.

I think it depends on the size and color. A big, dark-colored one could imitate a leach, but the same size in white or chartreuse could imitate a baitfish. Smaller ones can imitate all kinds of little bugs and nymphs.

I posted a pic of one a couple yrs ago on the "Post pics from your phone" thread. Don't know how to put it on this page, but I did bump it up for you.

Depends how you fish them. Weighted fishing very slow across the bottom could imitate a number of different nymphs. Faster retrieves could imitate a minnow or leech.
