Why the call them tunnel hulls when that got no tunnel?

I hear bout this all the time. When I vision tunnel hulls, I vision catamaran tunnels or tri hulls. I am old school I guess. Most the ones I seen that claimed to be tunnel hull look more like modified Vs. Enlighten me.

Some boat companies around here make what they call a tunnel hull. Is made to run a motor high for shallow water.

I know G3 sells a tunnel hull model, but I just can't see the tunnel? I can't see too good either. Comes with maturity.

The only real tunnel hulls I am aware of that aren't misnamed cats are the old Penn Yan tunnel drive inboards where the prop sat right up in a tunnel in the hull. You could drive those old beasts anywhere.

Tom, most tunnel hulls today are used for outboard jets..The long tunnel that was made for shallow water props do not work well with outboard jets..The jet tunnels are not very long or deep..Just enough depth to get the jet "shoe" above the bottom of the boat..

That is why you have not noticed them...

We started a jet boat business about 15 years ago and Jim Starkey designed his own tunnel..It has worked great on his Rhino boats..

Back in the 80 s Shadow built a true tunnel bass boat. It had nothing to do with shallow water, it was all about speed. Rated for 200 HP some were mounting 300 HP . These boats were much more stable than a deep V . Most drivers couldnt stand the pressure over 100 MPH . I would like to get my hands on one of those today. Great fishing platform.

I know a guy with a Allison/Stratos tunnel hull. He's got 2 motors and they are both cannons. Like the above post, the faster he goes the more stable the boat gets. I just don't care for anything above 70mph, this boat can make you forget. Only boat I've ever seen run the gulls over.
