Default how bad it got last weekend even killed sum fish

we drove past the little pond on sunday and saw a few floaters but didnt stop to really look at it but it made the paper for it

How bad was last weekend’s hail storm? Not even the fish were safe.

The giant chunks of ice are suspected of killing fish — and Canada geese — in the Northland, the Missouri Department of Conservation said.

Powerful storms hit the area late Saturday and early Sunday, knocking down trees and power lines and damaging homes. The National Weather Service had reports of hail that was 5.5 inches in diameter.

After the storm, fire crews reported the sight of hail blanketing the ground like snow, creating a surreal mist as the ice vaporized.

A sudden drop in temperature can kill fish, conservation officials said. Enough hail falling into the water might have lowered the temperature enough to do just that.

There’s also the possibility that enough hail and cold rainwater would cause a pond to “turn over,” so that water with little oxygen quickly rises up. That can kill fish, too.

“I’ve never seen this happen before, and I’ve been at this for 24 years,” state fisheries biologist Jake Allman said in a news release.

The conservation department found several dead fish floating in a pond at the Lakewood Greenway near North Norton Avenue and Northeast Vivion Road. There were also reports of dead Canada geese at the park, though they were moved before conservation officials arrived.

The conservation department plans to put more channel catfish into the pond at the Lakewood Greenway, to replace those that were killed.
