If that is a white crappie, I guess I have never caught a black one.

Found this ID info on-line. I sure didn't know the difference.
One way to distinguish the black crappie from the white is to count the spines on its dorsal fins. The black crappie has seven or eight spines on its dorsal fin. The white crappie has only five or six dorsal spines. Black crappies that live in clear, vegetated water have darker contrasting patterns on the body, while those from murkier water are lighter, appearing more “bleached.”

That's one big fish whatever color it is.

Great crappie. The best way I have found to tell a white from a black is to look for the vertical lines running from top to bottom. On the record fish you can clearly see several lines across the back. Take a look at the crappie in these pictures--they are all black. The scales are all scattered with no lines at all.

That one must have been real fat or full of eggs. My buddy caught on the exact same length a week or so ago but it only weighed 3lb 2oz.
