    Default Real Crappie Newb

    Hello everyone,

I just recently was fishing a bass tournament and caught a few crappies. After about the 4th one, I decided to keep them and actually cook them. I avoided them because I heard it was a pain to clean them and the amount of meat you got was not worth it. (he was scaling them and did a poor job or cooking them). I decided to fillet them out and found out they taste awesome.

Anyway, I was wondering if someone would be so kind to give me a list of must have items for catching crappies. certain soft baits or lures that work well...i dont expect for anyone to give out thier secret tricks, just some helpful advice on what to use and what to look for in a lake when fishing for crappies.

    Thank you all in advance!

Small jigs work great for crappie. I prefer marabou & chenille jigs in 1/32 and 1/16 oz. Small plastics also work great.

Lots to read in the archives on jig fishing.

    PM sent.

Jigs and minnows work the best for me. Remember that crappie tend to feed up so you want your jig or minnow above them. Once you get the depth right if they are in the mood you can catch them.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

Hard to beat a 1/32 or 1/16 oz. Blakemore Road Runner with a plastic grub. All kinds of fish will hit them. I bass fished for many years before I realized that crappie fishing was much more fun. I've caught more big bass on crappie lures than I ever caught fishing for bass with regular bass lures.

Yeah what everybody else said. I always carry along some jigs tied on 1/8 oz heads to use if the water has some current or if the wind gets up. Just keep reading this site and continue crappie fishing and you will trade all of that bass tackle for some good crappie stuff.

    Now that is the truth.
It's not the numbers or the size, it's the time spent on the water!
