I use 10' for jigging. the advantage is you dont have to be right up on the tree to reach in there and you have alot of length to fight a fish. I havent really found a disadvantage yet.
I would like some feedback on long pole lengths many use for fishing crappies.
I have been reviewing poles on line for the spring season and I found many poles in 8 to 12 foot lengths.
Advantages? Disadvantages?
I currently use ultra light rods and spinning reels. I troll (primary), jig and hang baits/jigs from pencil bobbers.

I spider rig with 8 poles...all 13' long. Not too long (or too heavy for a old man) to swing fish in the boat but far enough away from the boat so the troller dont mess things up.
Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.
I use 11 foot and 14 foot for spider riggen
I use 13' as well. They have worked great for me as well.
I use 8 & 9' but mostly jig right under bow of boat/troll motor
I use 10 poles for spider riggin.....10's 12's 14's .....keeps the baits out of the TM....covers a swath about 32 ft wide.....

I use 16-18 footers. I just got my first 20 footer this year. I can't wait to try it out.
I use a 12 ' pole for fishing minnows and jigs in the brush in oxbow lakes. It seems like anything longer is a little too long (sometimes have to choke up on the pole even with the 12') and anything shorter is a little too short. For this kind of fishing the 12' pole is kind of like Goldilocks' porridge.
