Default Abu Garcia Carabus Delicate 622UL

Received the rod last week sometime, I had the chance to fish it in my pond a little bit during the week, and spent about 3 hours fishing it on Friday evening after work. The wife fished the MB3 634L and I fished the Carabus Delicate 622UL. It is the only rod I fished on the trip. As usual we were fishing for whatever would bite. We were catching bluegill/sunfish from 5 to a little over 7 inches, with one 8 incher on the Delicate and a couple 9 to 10 in black crappie. The fish put a nice bend to in the rod.

The rod weighs in at 99g, so it’s the heaviest of the Abu Garcia rods I’ve acquired this year. The rod didn’t feel heavy when it was the only rod I used on Friday paired with a Diawa Presso. I did rig it up on Saturday with a Abu Garcia Revo Beast while fishing, I only casted it a couple of times. The weight was noticeable at first after having been using a Carabus Extreme paired with the Daiwa Presso.

The rod is marketed as a lower price point area trout rod. I paid right under $90 including shipping from Tradeinn, with shipping taking about 3 weeks, though it seemed longer than that while I was waiting.

The rod comes with 7 Fuji New concept O ring guides, and a split Fuji reel seat. This is the first rod I’ve used with this type reel seat. I thought it might feel weird, turns out I never noticed it while fishing.

Overall impressions it’s basically as Abu Garcia describes it a lower price point rod made with pretty good components.

They say it has a soft action, I would agree, it doesn’t feel as crisp as the Carabus Extreme Nano or the MB3. Looking at the bending curves the action maybe just a hair slower than the others but not much. It’s hard to describe but the other rods feel more fun when bringing in a fish. For the price paid, I think it's worth it. I was just hoping that it might be a lower cost hidden gem.

Most likely I'll let my wife or other people use the rod when fishing on the boat. I just have other rods that offer more fun to me.

Z, Abu makes great bang-the-$ rods for sure, but be careful. Their blanks somehow seems brittle when bend beyond necessary...I've had hairline fractures on 2 MB, a first Gen and a MB3, just saying. And I believe a member Alpha posted a damage top section on a Abu Finesse rod as well, maybe we just bad luck..lol.

Whether it be that rod or any other: I wish you lots of thumps ahead... and all the fun a body can stand while doin' it.

You are correct. I've come to the conclusion that to protect myself as much as possible when pursuing high end rods that I need to look for the tech in the blanks. Rods from Graphite Leader.....TenRyu....and the new Major Craft Banshee are using T1000G...MX40, or in TenRyu's case Magna Flex, gives the rods much more elasticity yet allow them to keep the very high sensitivity. EverGreen also uses T1000G...and there are many others. While I really enjoy fishing my Abu Garcia rods it is not lost on me that when comparing them side by side with my rods that have the T1000G they are not as robust. Now having said that I have caught several thousand fish with the ABU's with no issues save for that one rod that broke several years back. But going forward I will look for the high tech blanks.

    Regards
