Nice variety for testing drag
I met up with my fishing buddy back at lake West Point at one of out favorite boat ramps .
By the time he had arrived I’d caught two fish on the new combo , the 5’6” Daiwa Trout X XUL with my new Shimano Soare XR c2000sspg .
My first fish was a nice shellcracker hybrid that gave me a nice battle on the XUL and gave me a good drag test . The drag has carbon washers instead of felt . I like the sound and the way it performs.
I’m liking this reel with its short handle . It fits the way I retrieve a light lure . Rather than use the handle knob I use the tip of my finger against the handle , at the knob to rotate the handle . I don’t know why , but I’ve always done it this way unless I’m cranking a lure .
Which means I need a low inertia reel and this one with its 4.6/1 gear ratio is great .
The shallow 2000 size spool on the compact body is a great size and spooled with Daiwa x8 J braid Grand , this combo casts a micro spinner as far as my 5’6” St Croix Avid , which has the little brother Soare XR500sspg on it .
I ended up catching 36 fish total , most were small gills , longears , and a few small bass , but I did manage a few decent gills and a strange looking bass .
My buddy caught 20 gills and green sunfish on his 5’9” 2wt flyrod with several of his bluegills being a nice size .
All in all , a fun day even with the heat .

Nice catch. I’ve got a couple of reels with short handles. I like em. In Japan they sell a lot of 35mm handles for the guys fishing area trout lakes. Watched a lot of videos of them fishing…reeling same as you said. I reel like that when I’m wanting to go real slow. Sounds like you’re liking the reel.

Those are some good looking fish but I’m really stuck on the rod and reel. Just looks super to me. Glad y’all had fun and got a few to show for it.

I took my 4’6” Daiwa Trout X XUL paired with a Daiwa Fuego LT 1000d and Grand J braid . Just to compare with the 5’6” .
For those not familiar with Daiwa’s Trout X , the 4”6” and 5’ models are red and black with silver rings on the reel seat .
The longer models have a split grip in black and gold .
I had tough time getting use to casting the 4’6” rod . I got decent distance out of it , but had to be careful not to try and over power the cast .
Felt great when I hooked up though . A fun small fish rod .
I only fished it about thirty minutes, I had to get back to the Soare XR .
Another thing , I always felt the Fuego was one of my smoothest , easiest to wind reel I own , but I could tell a slight resistance in it today compared to the Soare XR . Could be a couple of drops of Lucas reel oil would have remedied the issue .
