Thread: Call Me the 46 Foot Guy

I am being a gillchaser imitation today since he got my curiosity up with all his casting distance talk. I recently replaced the line on my three ultra light rods with 4# Varivas Twitchmaster. My three rods are:

4' 6" Fenwick HMG moderate action with a Shimano Sedona 500.
5' 0" St. Croix Avid UL fast action with a Pfleuger President size 20.
5' 6" St. Croix Premier moderate action 2 piece with a KastKing Zephyr 1000.

Hot day with temp in the low 90's. Wind light and variable. I cast each rod 5 times with a 1/32 jig head and a curly tail plastic that brought the total weight to 1/22 Oz. All three rods performed within the same range. All casts were between 45 and 47 1/2 feet and all three rods had casts that spanned that range. The overall average for each rod was right at 46 feet give or take an inch or two.

Most of the equipment was at least 10 years old some more than 15. The only exception was the Zephyr which I recently purchased to replace an ooooold Shakespeare 2400.

The only headache I ran into was with the Zephyr. It was mainly because I am not used to a wide shallow spool and I may have overfilled it a bit.

But I do like the Twitchmaster for casting. It is just that my old eyes and fingers have a devil of a time handling it. Took me forever to get the jig tied on.

Bottom line seems to be that I have a 46 foot casting arm with crappie jigs. I don't have a longer UL rod so I don't know if I would do any better that way.

Now I just have to find a way to get to some water soon. My driveway is all fished out.
