For me , it’s all of that.
I enjoy trying new gear , experimenting with different techniques and combinations.
I also enjoy collecting, I have a lot of rods and a few reels that never made more than one trip to the lake.
Sitting here thinking about it last couple days, hobbie's. Take fishing. Is fishing about fishing or collecting and experiementing with equipment? I have about 20 rods and reels,m casting and spinning about half and half. I've got rods and reels I seldom if ever use!

Lots of different approaches to any hobby. For me I appreciate good tackle but it is more about the fishing and as said above being out in nature. I've never been much of a collector. If I have what I need I'm happy.
What Bill said. Mostly, I like getting away from everyone and everything sometimes and having a good piece of equipment in my hand makes me smile. Doesn’t have to be expensive, just better than I’m used to having. Then the wildlife, which I seem to be covered up with. I’m at about 30 combos and a few strays, some I seldom use but won’t part with, probably ever. My BC rods have dust but they’re sweet. The UL gets the most play in recent years but I’ll revisit the others at some point so……….

There's a saying go.."If you can, then you must." Growing up fishing I remember me and a handful of cousins can only buy what we could afford and what we could back than were mostly Japanese reels. In the late 70s and early 80s MADE IN USA reels like the Penns were expensive and Daiwa and a few other Oriental brand were cheap but quality were so so. So we sourced our from flea market. Reels like the old Heddon, Pfluger, and yes the Abu Garcia were cheap but caught us tons of fish. As an adult now I can say I'm pretty much capable of buying any reels or rod made available, but still choose wisely because I'm still a hobbyist at best and an amateur at worst. But when I did go the JDM path it's because I'm curious as to why all of a sudden now MADE IN JAPAN rods and reels are a thing. However like most folks here I bought them to fish not to collect, but hate getting rid of them even sitting there collecting dust...lol. Cheers!

A thought just crossed my mind. I’ve had a spinning reel since I was single digit in age, but I didn’t get a reel with a line roller on the bail til I was sixteen. All up til then we’re a single wire bail. Quite a ways from what I use today.

Fishing is just 1 hobby, I also love wood turning. A day flys by when doing either 1. And I might add that both are quite expensive at times.
