JDM does not mean it is made in Japan. It just means it is sold in the Japanese market. And yes in doing this for 13 years more products are being sourced to China from Japan. But…the Japanese hold their feet to the fire to produce a quality product for price paid. If it is not a quality product the Japanese will not buy it. An example is many Daiwa and Shimano reels that are sold in the states will not be sold in Japan….an example is the Shimano Sedona…the Japanese will not buy it so no need to try to sell it there. I use to think all gear made in China was poorly made. But I’ve found out they can make high quality gear, if that is what the order calls for.

I remember years ago a guy selling aquaponic beds that he was having made in China. He said the same thing, they make what they are told to make. Most companies unfortunately care more about making a larger profit then selling a quality product.

I agree with everything you said and I was not assuming items sourced from China are junk. I just got a chuckle out of the Japan-China connection in this regard. I am old enough to remember the days when "Made in Japan" on a product label was synonymous with junk. Today many people think that way about Chinese products. And for many people it is a political issue but we won't go there. Most countries' manufacturing facilities eventually learn to evolve to the quality demanded by their customer base or they go nowhere. There are many quality products coming out of China. Rifle scopes are another good example.

But I did have to sympathize with the OP's comment about not needing a $300 reel for panfish to get a quality experience.

Everybody should fish with whatever makes them happy. The important thing is go fishing, catch fish, repeat. It is frustrating that I haven't been able to get out in quite a while. Enjoy your gear whatever it is.
