Post JDM Daiwa Luvias 2020: Help needed

    Folks,

I purchased a couple of JDM spinning reels this year:
    • Abu Garcia MGX Theta 1000s
    • Shimano Twin Power 2000s
    • Daiwa Luvias LT 2000s (made in China, not Japan)

The latter is the latest acquisition. Of the three, I am the least happiest with the Luvias because it makes a raspy sound while reeling. It isn’t audible if reeling fast, but very much as I reel slowly while twitching jig + plastic. At first I thought it might be the SLP spool I added to it (availability of reasonably priced spare spools was the main reason why I ordered the Luvias). So I took off the spool and slowly turned the handle with no spool on. Same raspy noise.

Neither the slightly cheaper Theta, nor the Twin Power make such a noise while reeling.

Does anyone have a solution for this raspy noise?

Note: there is no feeling of anything grinding within. It feels smooth while reeling, but I would like to get rid of the noise. Would a drop of two of reel oil on the pinion help? Or, can anyone recommend a good reel repair shop? Being a JDM reel I doubt Daiwa USA will take a look at it.

Not sure what it could be....but Daiwa USA will not severice any JDM reel.....even if same model reel is sold in the states. Mikes Reel Repair...which I think is in Canada has good reputation.

Thanks Randy. Maybe it’s just that I need to add some lube? I’m not sure. What I am certain of it that I don’t feel anything out of place when I turn the handle. Just the noise bothers me.

Do you know of any US based reel service provider?

Were you able to find a spare spool for your MGX theta? I would like a spare spool for it but haven’t found any online.

Hope you are beginning to get things settled down in Arkansas.

Did not locate a spool for the MGX. Professional Reel Service out of Wichita I hear is very good. They used to have a website but now you contact them on Facebook.

I got a spare theta spool from digitaka. I think it was 55 bucks at the time.

    Thanks both. Much appreciated.

Will keep my eyes open for the MGX Theta spare spool on digitaka.

You will need to email them and request the spool. They will reply with a link for you purchase.

Edit: they actually still have it in their part shop - are you looking for a 1000s spool?

Thanks a ton! Still trying to familiarize myself with the Digitaka website. Yes, it’s the 1000s spool I wanted. Appreciate sharing the link.

    @TXPanfisher,

Thanks for the link. Placed the order last night. Must have been a special link because I could not get to it through the click path on digitaka.

I think I will order another theta or maybe a Zenon before I would order another Luvias.

You might want to give Tackletrap a call about the reel. One of the few shops autorized to do warranty work on magseals and other high end stuff. I've sent in a batch of 5 to have cleaned and super tuned and they came back as good or better than new. Good people to do business with. Scott
