    Default Line comparison

Up until a couple of years again, I’ve always been a 4# line user . Mostly copolymer lines .
Ive usually used P-line . Before that it was SilverThread an40 , but they quit making it .
After following some of the posts here on Crappie.com , I decided to try 2# test .
First it was some Vicious 2# . Not bad , but I keep hearing everybody talk about the SOS Trout magnet line , so I bought a big spool of that .
Then I got to researching line diameters , and I found out 4# Original P-line is the same diameter as the SOS 2# line , .005 inch .
Then I discovered 2# P-line CX green mist which is .004 inch diameter .
I did an unscientific breakage test on the 2# P-line, the #2# SOS , and the 4# P-line original line .
I tied the same knot attached to my trigger scale and pulled each until they broke . All of them broke at the knot .
    The 2# P-line ( the thinnest) broke at a consistent 2.25# , the SOS @ 3.75#, and the 4# broke jut over 4# .
    I’ve been using the 2# P-Line 90% of the time, lately .
Tonight I decided to spool up some 4# original P-line on one of my reels and it felt like I was putting rope on my reel .
I don’t know if I can go back to using the .005 and larger line .
Tomorrow it’s supposed to be on the windy side and I was thinking of going to a 1/8oz drop shot weight and figured I should go up to four pound test , but I don’t know.
I may try it . With the 1/8oz weight , distance shouldn’t be a problem.

I have enough trouble seeing and untangling 4lb line, no idea what the diameter is? I still use Silver Thread, you can buy a 3K yard spool on eBay for $20 or less. I’ve never tried 2lb line but you must be able to put a bunch of it on a spool.

On deep spools , I use the SOS 2# for backing , it’s cheap . Then spool on about 100 yards of the P-Line . Shallow spool reels work great with small diameter lines .
I bought some 4# Silver Thread before it was discontinued, but it’s wasn’t an40 and it’s not as thin and is a little stiffer . I think it was Excalibur.
Any Silver Thread you find now will be old stock .
Indoors , the 2# gives me a little trouble , putting it through rod guides and tying knots . But outside , in natural light , I do a lot better as long as my fingers are working properly that day .
But man will that stuff cast a jig .

Thanks for your report. I have been using the Gamma Panfish 2 lb which even they say tests at over 4 lb. Line diameter of .2 or so supports that. This is my second season with it and the 2lb spools up very nicely and casts very well with my TSS/TCB rods. Knot strength is very good, not bad to work with with my fumble fingers. I use the Kreh non slip mono and palomar knots.
