    Default Little line help!

Hello all, I’m still in a state of confusion when it comes to Japanese line (don’t own any), especially one rated in PE as to American lb-test. Anyone with JDM rods with PE rating line can shed some light and so hopefully I won’t make a serious mistake and send an expensive rod to the junkyard sooner than later. The said rod is a Abu Eradicator 510 model rated in MAX PE 0.3, and this what shows up on Google search! Oh thanks in advance for helping me skip through 48 pages of line info!

    ……is this chart accurate?

Well…maybe. PE ratings can be all over the place. The gou ratings are very close…..but I can show you other charts where it is slightly different. If I was going to run a PE line on that rod I’d make sure what the breaking strength truly is. For a gou rating of .3 I’d make sure it is at or around 7 pounds. One thing I like about Varivas PE lines is they break at what they say. Many PE lines break way above what they say.

    Regards

Randy, first thank you for taking the time. Now if my understanding you correctly you are saying the Abu Eradicator 67 slow taper that you own can handle PE line up to breaking strenght 10 pound base on this Gou chart? If that is true can I use mono line up to 6lb test on the 5-10 footer (diameter aside)?

Not trying to start a debate on this subject, but DO NOT try to hang 6 lbs (or 5, or even 4) worth of weight on your line and lift it with your rod. Chances are, the rod will break. I don't think the upper line rating is meant to quantify the strength of your rod.

From a purely tech spec yes….but those rods are made for small diameter lines. You will see some rods with both a mono and PE rating. On the 67 Slow Taper rod itself it has a max rating of 3# nylon yet also the 0.5 PE rating. I can tell you a 6# mono on the 510 Eradicator is not going to work well at all. It took me several years to learn…..and was really brought to my attention by Chris Stewart….that these rods are at their best when you use the lines they were designed for.

Thank you both gentlemen for your wealth of knowledge and I shall continue using no more than 2lb test SOS line until I get a chance to order some Ester line for this bad boy of a rod.

S_v, I owe you a thank you as well for your willingness to share a good deal siting when you did and now I have a very well received piece of engineering (my only rod with Torzite guides) fish catching machine on the way from land of the downunder.

I owe a big thanks to Chris Stewart for pointing out to me that I would get the best out of these rods by using the proper lines.
