I have wanted an AGS rod for quite a while but was not wanting to pay the $600 for it. AGS guides are more rigid and much lighter than titanium Torzite....and from users who have both they report the AGS guides are more sensitive. The rod recovers faster with the AGS guides and from articles I have read casting is more accurate. I also want one to use in the real world of panfishing and of course some trout fishing as well. I want to be able to talk about rods with AGS guides and to do that I have to use one. St Croix just paid, what I can only assume is a pretty good fee, to Daiwa to use AGS guides on their new Legend Extreme line. St Croix was quick to note they will be the only US rod company allowed to use these guides. At the price I just had to get it. As we have talked about before when you get to the high end you can be splitting hairs talking about sensitivity. While a Tict Ice Cube Rockin’ Drift is not a trout rod......it is the most expensive rod I own and is soft in action....and the sensitivity of it is spooky good.....so it will be a good comparison. I communicate sometimes with a Japanese trout angler. He has a Presso Limited AGS. When I asked him how sensitive the rod was and I quote “It is so sensitive you can feel the fish chasing the lure”.....LOL.

    Alphahawk,

I am curios about something here: why does one need sensitivity when going after trout with spoons? I understand that will not be your primary use or your only primary use. But what about Japanese anglers that use them for the intended purposes?

Are those shipping and handling charges typical for a rod from Plat? I was just stuck with a $38 for shipping and handling – seems quite steep for a rod listed at ca. $175

This is how Plat recovers some money on a sale. They charge shipping fees. Plat has been charging a handling fee for sometime now. Depends on how you look at it but you’re still saving quite a bit on the rod. Those of us who purchased the Presso Limited reel still got a great deal....even though we paid shipping and handling fees. I got in some jig heads a few weeks back and I paid 10 bucks shipping and a $2.89 handling fee. I would buy all my gear from Digitaka but they do not have all the gear I want.

    Regards

Thank you, I certainly agree about the deal: somewhat less enticing but still very good. Does it mean that orders on regular items incur smaller handling and handling charges?

That is an “Area” trout rod. An area is pretty much a pay lake that gets a ton of pressure. From what I’ve read sensitivity is important in those lakes. Stream trout rods....that also are made for spoons.....are nowhere near as sensitive as an area trout rod. Chris Stewart could give a much better answer but that is the basic answer.....highly pressured fish need a very sensitive rod. I wish we had those “Area” type lakes here. I’ve watched a lot of videos from those areas and a lot of them are really neat places to fish.

Yes...I can only go back for 3 years on my order history but they have been doing it much longer than that.

But why? I can't imagine trout "tasting" a spoon when it is flying by them at a relatively fast pace (at least, compared to a jig head). From what I have seen, it is a reaction bite.

To be clear, I am not pressing my point here, just very curious. As stated earlier, this is probably the best user-driven resource on JDM ultralight equipment...

And here is a technical question: can I add items to my order at Plat after they have sent me a link to pay? I'm not asking how, just want to make sure they don't take offense etc.

Thanks again for all the comments.

You can add items. Just contact them and they will do it. Plat and digitaka have always been very good to deal with. That’s the best answer I can give you about the rods. Just in the 8 years or so I’ve been doing this the area trout rods get lighter and more sensitive as each year goes by. Many area trout rods now coming in at under 2 ounces. Hopefully Chris will see this and give us more insight. Just some fun info.... they have serious trout tourneys in those area lakes...it’s a pretty big deal.

Thanks, Alphahawk. Yes, I watched some fun videos of Japanese anglers pulling out 9 lbs trout from an area with the rod bent to a straight line at an angle to the reel seat.

In late January this was the tab for a rod from them. Their shipping prices may fluctuate due to yen/dollar exchange rate, and possible increases in service prices in Japan due to lockdowns....

    Sub-Total: 9,750YEN
    Shipping: EMS (1.0) 2,900YEN
    handling charge: 341YEN
