Default Kayak Trip Report, Flint River

I returned to the Flint River today putting in at Turkey Spring Launch off Cloud Cove Rd. Amazing what a few days will do. Visibility was great (about two feet) and the current was greatly reduced, water was 44 degrees. The fish were still deep, but agreeable. I kept a limit for New Years dinner tomorrow and returned 68 that would measure, mostly larger fish that were 12 to 13 inches but returned several slabs that were 14 to 16 inches. 50/50 mix of White and Black Crappie with endless shorts, bass, gills and stripe returned. I'm still using the Z-man jig body with fish 8 foot deep in 10 to 12 feet of water. Lots of activity on the river today with hunters early and fisherman once it warmed up. Only one other boat fishing for Crappie though, the rest were after Catfish or Bass.

Great report. You have defiantly been on the crappie the last few months. Hope to get back out there after them soon myself.

I was hesitant to post this, but I'll get the doubters going just for the fun of it. I have two fish counters glued together, one for Crappie and one for Gills since I often target both in the warmer months. Often in the winter I'll keep count of what goes in my cooler with one and track the measurable throw backs with the other. Yesterday after the first handful I started tracking the fish what would measure but I tossed back. It started with larger fish, but after I got my limit I returned numerous smaller fish that I would normally keep. I left with 30 and had 68 throw backs on the second counter.

I additional found several locations that the fish finder showed covered up with fish and I caught numerous crappie on, but the fish finder showed dozens and dozens. I really like this area!

I knew this area looked great but didn’t know it would be that loaded up with fish!

Strange though, in Limestone I can usually get a fish off every tree. In this area of the Flint I'll fish several laydowns with nothing, then find a group of Crappie in a small area. A different laydown a 100 feet away looks the same, same depth and often even looks better (more branches throughout the water column) but nothing. There are hundreds of acres of shallows and back water that will be in two or three feet of water this spring along the banks, should be a great spawning area.
