Default Kayak Trip Report, Indian Creek

Fished Indian Creek today, kept half a limit and returned a limit of larger fish. Numerous shorts returned. Most of the fish came between where the creek opens into the lake and where Barren Fork Creek connects. Seems the fish haven't moved in yet, almost all the fish were Black Crappie (year-round residents) and were 10 to 12 feet deep. The water was 75 degrees and warmed to 78 by afternoon. The water was clear near the lake, cloudy the further you go up the creek. All fish came single pole using a 1/32oz jig head with a Pink and Chartreuse tube body.

It took half a day to get on a pattern. There were some baitfish schools above Barron Fork Creek but few. Nothing looked like Crappie holding on structure anywhere on my fish finder. I finally found the Crappie holding under heavy timber in 10 to 12 feet of water. Once I figured out what they were doing I did pretty well and could exclude all the cover that didn't match the pattern. I would let my bait drop until it landed on a large tree trunk or branch off the bottom and then jig just below it. All fish came off just three laydowns that matched the pattern. Nothing on the fish finder (down view) since they were directly below the large branches but I pulled a couple dozen off each good tree. Slow work but no current made it work with the 1/32 jig head. Fish would pick it up falling, but no thump, I'd just notice the bait didn't fall as far (matter of inches). If you were more than a few inches off the tree they would come out to get it.
