Default Kayak Trip Report, Moulton New City Lake

I fished Moulton today from daylight till around 3PM. I started out looking for Gills shallow on the bed but only found Shellcracker everywhere I went. I finally found concentrations of fish just above a thin layer of Grass on the bottom in several places in 12 to 14 feet of water around 9AM and started a slow retrieval of a 1" slider on a 1/32oz jig head just about the grass. I kept a half limit of Crappie and a half limit of large Gills. Returning many, many more. I seemed to get a Gill or Crappie just about every other cast all day once I got on a pattern. The thermocline was only 16 feet so much of the deeper cover wasn't available to the fish. The water temperature was 87 degrees with visibility of about 8 feet. The lake is also about four feet low. Great day on the water!

Just personal preference much like keeping small Crappie to eat and releasing the larger ones. Nothing against the Shellcracker, just like the Gills and Crappie better. I released a half dozen Crappie that were huge (14 to 16 inches) also.
