    Default Gills

Guess after a bad spring for crappie Im gonna try some gills this coming weekend. My question is when using red worms what kind of set up do you guys use??Ive fished for them a little but never seriously targeted them. Im also gonna try some 1 inch sliders but taking some worms as well. Thanks.

I usually fish it first without a bobber. Using the same countdown with a 1/16-1/32 jig tipped with a one inch piece of worm. Attempting to swim it back slowly just off the bottom. When I locate the bed I employ the bobber tuned to a depth of one inch off the bottom

I like to use a small piece of worm with split shot and just slowly bring it thru the beds. Heck you're lucky to even hit the bottom when it's on! When that slows down then do the same with a cricket.

Don’t mean to hijack your thread but I’ve never targeted gills either but may do it this spring. What depth do they usually bed up in. ? I know there are tons of variables. Just looking for a good starting point. Also I have side imaging so hoping that helps find the beds

Go for it. I can learn from your questions too.

Side imaging works well, look for the depressions for the bed and the white spots in the beds are the fish. I throw a marker when I start seeing beds and a marker when I stop seeing them and then fish between. I typically use crickets with a float about 18” up and adjust from there.

about this much worm is all I use threaded on the hook like this . I use the same method as me above I keep a rig tied up with a float and a rig tied up with just a split shot . Worm goes a long ways unless you let them swallow it ! Side image is a great tool for finding beds but if the grass is up much it will block your return so when we get those big rains Feb/March I take advantage of the hi water and scout for beds with SI up in the areas that’s usually too shallow to scan without high water! Also A good pair of polarized sun glasses with the sun to your back easing down the bank will help locate beds or you can just ease down the bank casting one or the other until you get bit .then once bit fish that spot few times you will know quickly if you have found a bed it will be every cast ! Have found beds in 6”-6’ water

A little confused. That is how you bait the hook?

I dont know how much of a tip it is, but when you do find them bedding good sometimes you can drop in a bare hook in the bed and theyll bite it. Theyll eat just about anything you throw at them.

Yes thats all the worm that I use on the hook and I try to keep it straight up on the shank like shows in the picture ! When they are not picky it dont much matter but I have seen many a time if that piece of worm gets down around of the bend of the hook they want hit it or if that worm stays on too long and turns white ish put on a new piece . And I like the long shank hook to prevent gut hooking ! Most the time I can catch 4-5 or more fish on that small piece of worm Casting The 1 sliders or a popsicle color curly tail on a 1/32 head works very well also.
