    Default Pond or Lake record

A 5lb crappie is a great catch and the fisherman who caught it should go done in the crappie hall of fame, and their name written in the crappie record books. The question is which record books.

After I read the article about the guy that caught the soon to be record I began to ask myself a question.

The question is, should there be a pond record, and lake record?

The two bodies of water are totally different, what are your thoughts?

First, this is said with brotherly love. Congrats for an awesome catch and to my knowledge done legally and ethically so the fish and angler deserves all praise. However, I feel fish records should be listed in two categories. Either public or non-public waters. To me it doesn’t matter the size of the water environment but only if access is available to all public. If it isn’t available to everyone then it should be listed as non-public. Just my opinion. Peace to all.

    When does a pond become a lake? 20 acres? 50 acres? 100?

And what about rivers? They're different, too.

I think it's unlikely the IGFA will ever set up record categories for different types of water.

Good point, I would categorize lakes, rivers, and reservoirs together.

The TWRA sent off a sample of of it to a lab to be DNA tested to see if its a true black crappie or a hybrid ( triploid) . Will be a couple of weeks probably before they get the results back. If its a hybrid its still a nice fish but wont be a record black crappie.

Wow! Congrats on that monster crappie. I am jealous and I fish ponds occasionally. I feel like it is deserving of a record. It does seem unfair but he might not have a fancy boat with all the fancy gadgets like some of us have either. Rod and reel record is what it is and should be. Just my humble opinion.

The fact that it was caught in a pond makes it more impressive to me. I fish a lot of ponds and smaller lakes. Crappie over populat small body's of water fast. I see nothing wrong with it. Trust me it was luck and maybe one of us will be that lucky on day.

Same to me as a high fence buck that’s been “grown” to be a record.
To be a record it needs to be from publicly accessible waters. Just my opinion
