Don't think you can go wrong with either choice. Big G does have less crappie pressure due to its size but bass fisherman more than make up for it. Neely might not have as big a crowd as Gville will especially during the week.
Planning a crappie trip for the week of March 18th. I used to live in Helena, AL in the mid 90's and fished Lay a lot. I have also fished Weiss. However, looking to try a new lake but can't decide between Guntersville or NH? Leaning towards Guntersville due to less crappie pressure, more black crappie, and the shear beauty of the area..! Any advice would greatly be appreciated..!

Thanks for the response coach..! When I moved back to Ohio we had been going to Ky lake for the past 20 years but haven't for the last two years due to the Asian Carp invasion! Does Guntersville have a better population of black crappie?
Guntersville has both black and white crappie. It is a huge body of water and I would guess number of blacks vs whites would vary according to location cover, water depth ect. They both taste the same. Before I committed I would consider a few things. Lodging close to or on the lake Gville is your choice. If you have a small boat I would choose Neely. Guntersville is big water and can get real rough in windy conditions. There are some huge crappie in Guntersville. How much do you Know about the Lake? Neely is smaller might be able to narrow down fishing area easier. Either way you are probably going to catch some fish that time of year. I live on Weiss, I grew up on Guntersville and still fish it a lot. I occasionally fish Neely. I will be glad to help you but there are others on this site that you can communicate with. Cowboy 215 and RogerA are Neely experts. Slabprowler lives in Scottsboro and fishes Gville all the time.
Coach... I appreciate the feedback! Yes, I have a big boat it's a Triton 189 Multi Species Fiberglass 175 with 5hp kicker. In fact maybe to big handle the older I get! LOL I have checked lodging at both locations and it is very limited on NH. There are many options for renting on Guntersville. However, I don't know either lake and don't have a good idea as where to start. In regards to crappie I have always favored black crappie... I agree you can't taste a difference as there all good! The primary reason is for the fight as I believe they fight a little harder. I do long line troll for whites.... but my first love is "flipping" cover with tube jigs, etc. I have watched some Richard Gene videos and it appears Guntersville has less current and clearer water, which the blacks seem to favor. I was also wondering since Guntersville is know for bass fishing most of the fishing pressure is targeted at bass? We have a similar situation up here in Ohio in regards to Lake Erie. Everyone comes for the Walleye and Perch but it is actually a top notch Crappie lake at the right times of the year.
Both lakes are good ! I fish Neely a lot but live in Scottsboro because I personally think that Guntersville has way more pressure than Neely Henry plus no grass and Guntersville is way more crowded than it used to be . It’s getting to where if you going to fish a spot you better go early or someone will beat ya too it! We have a lot of water though and plenty places to find fish
Too blessed to be stressed!Triton189 thanked you for this post
You can't go wrong on any of those lakes that time of year. You can long line, spider rig or jig fish on any of them. Guntersville and NH will have more blacks than Weiss. The state park on Guntersville is smack in the middle of it all and Town Creek is an awesome fishery for crappie.

Thanks for the info as I need to pull the trigger on a place soon as they are all filling up quickly! While looking for a place to stay I found one that was home of Von Braun's scientist friends. I had always heard they located to the Huntsville area because it reminded them of their homeland in Germany. Had no idea it was in the Guntersville area.
Hey triton. Where u living at up there. Moved down here 5 years ago from Napoleon. I am by no means an expert here yet but am partial to NH Actually headed for the walleye end of April... any way good luck and enjoy your time in the beautiful state of bama
