    Default Weiss Lake info/help

My son just bought a place on Lake Weiss so I'll be hauling my boat to see how the crappie action is on 'The Crappie Capitol of the World' lake!!!! I understand it is a 3 rod limit lake so guess spider rigging is not allowed?
I love dock shooting and from the map,it appears to have a large number of docks but, are they shootable?
His place is waterfront with a dock just south of Lawrence, AL. I know nothing about the lake or the area and
would appreciate any help you guys care to share!
    Thanks in advance,
    Okie Bob

Dock shooting is great there! You spend time eleminating the unproductive docks then generate a milk run of docks! Spider rigging in the channels will produce too. I'd rather dock shoot! Take plenty of water it gets hot quick! I like the docks that have around 7' of water out front

Thanks for the info Liftbite! I assume dock shooting is best late spring? I know they like the shade of a dock year round, at least a little but, seems best late spring, after the spawn. But, what about the rest of the year? Do you put out brush piles on Weiss? if so, I would assume in about 20' of water? And, is it true you can only have 3 poles per fisherman when spider rigging?

Okie Bob .... you are correct that there's a 3rod/person limit for Weiss. Shooting docks, long line trolling, and "bottom bouncing" seems to be the most widely used methods ... all depending on location and/or depth of the fish.

The few times I've been there, I've used all three of those methods ... along with casting jigs to shoreline brush. But, I've only been there in early Spring & late Fall, so I have no idea on methods used during the warmer periods. But ... I would have to think that "pushing" jigs or cranks around the bait balls in open water would work as well there, as it does around here, even if you are limited to 3rods per person.

Thanks for all the input. Not sure when I'll be heading that way but, definitely will in the near future. Just waiting on my son to close on the new place they just bought. That should happen around Aug 1st so I hope to get over there by September, latest.

While I appreciate everyone's input, I'm a little surprised that I don't see many posts about fishing Lake Weiss. Curious to know if it's just not fished a lot or those that do fish it don't like to post much????
Appears I'll be making my first trip to Weiss for the Labor Day weekend but, doubt I'll haul my boat this time. If anyone has an open seat one morning I'd be glad to give free dock shooting help or whatever else I might be of help with.

Only been over their twice I live about 50 min away .here is a distant pic of my first trip they was around 30 boats in one cove on the right so I went up a cove to the my left with only 2-3 boats to start out with then before it was over about 25-30 boats in that cove also all long lining we lost count at 124 only 15 keepers most fish were 9-9.1/2 " most folks were very friendly occasionally one would go against the grain but really enjoyed that trip that was at the end of February went back at the end of March to a different area that was more open they were 30+Boats but was more spread out. The lake is full of good fish if u learn how and where ,when to fish it.i been wanting to go back shooting some docks but just can't seem to find the time and need to be schooled on that still pretty rusty .i have a family reunion that day pm when it gets closer to that time maybe it work out where we could go I always looking for someone to fill the back seat fish mostly by my self.

That sounds great to me. I don't know when we'll get there or how long we'll be there yet. Right now we're sure we'll be there but, no details.
As I may have aready said, I love dock shooting and can show you the basics of how we do it out here.
Let's keep in touch till we get our plans together.

Weiss lake is fished all year around. During the summer there are lots of folks using the lake for pleasure and it hurts the fishing so a lot of people don't fish much this time of year. There are many methods of fishing that are used on Weiss and the time of year is the factor as to which one some folks use. I spider rig, long line and shoot docks, just depends on what time of year and what the fish are doing. Let us know how your trip goes.

My parents had a place there. It is great. We did not have a boat there so we decided to use a guide. We used Darrel Baker . He was awesome. We shot docks with him . If you can't find anyone's boat to get on look him up and you can see him on YouTube . Dock shooting on lake Weiss is how you find his video.
