Default Kayak Trip Report, Ditto Pits

I made another trip into Ditto withZ-man. Most fish came using a single pole, casting a 1/16oz spinner with a gold blade and an 1 ½”white twister tail body. Kept another limit of Crappie plus 15 gills.Biggest gill was almost 11”

    FYI, females still had eggs.

Good looking mess. That gill was bigger than most of the crappie I have been catching lately. Ha.

    DockShootinJack,

It was a good day, I tossed back a dozen or so larger Crappie and a hundred plus that were right at 9" or shorter. Z-man when home with half a limit or so and lots of short fish tossed back also.

I need to make some more trips harvesting the shorter fish. There's way too many and their condition shows it. All the fish were very skinny for early spring. If I can cull a few hundred of the 9 1/2" Crappie this year maybe there be enough food for the rest to be 11" or 12" next year. I'm going back this summer on the full moon for gills. They were scattered here and there right now, sure would be fun to catch them on the beds.

I am finding allot of skinny fish this year also. Don't know if the lately winter killed allot of the shad or what. But definitely are some poor fish this year. I pick up a few that have been eating well and are fat

It was a good day indeed. Ditch got there early and I (the old man) showed up a couple hours later. When I arrived, there were 3 other kayaks ...and it turned out they were BASS fisherman with nice new shiny equipment. I watched one guy catch 2 bass that easily went 3 to 4 lbs, in a matter of 5 minutes. Ditch and I got into several groups of crappie that went from 7 to 10 inches and thus we threw back a lot (more that I EVER have) - but the occasional bream (or bluegill / shellcracker) that we picked up were a lot of fun. The weeds are growing fast on the road and in the pond, making it a rough trip in and around.
