Hey guys, just wanted to post up what is more or less a scouting report from Lake Wedowee. Stayed there over the Thanksgiving holiday with my family and took my kayak up with me. Did some fishing, caught some small spotted bass, but no crappie, but did want to give some general info on the lake since I searched on here before I went up there and couldn't find much.
It's a really deep lake. We were staying down near the dam. The depth in the old river channel where we were was approximately 120' deep. In a lot of sections of the lake that I saw, the timber was not cut before the lake was impounded and there is a TON of standing timber, both in the coves and adjacent to the old river channel. The water is gin clear, with probably 6' of visibility or better. I tried vertical jigging the standing timber, and while I was marking fish, had no success catching them.
Looks like a lake with a lot of potential, and I'm sure if I had had more time and had gone to the trouble of procuring some minnows, I probably could have figured the crappie out. Anyways, hope the info is useful as to what to expect if you are going there.
Thank you for the report. It's always fun to try a new place. Hope you and your family had a great visit.
