Thanks guys, I think I'm gonna go for the shell. I'd like to be able to keep rods and stuff locked up and dry and like neon mentioned I could sleep in it if the wife and I go camping. Think I'll keep trolling craigslist for a good used one, don't really care about the paint job or color because my truck isn't anything special anyway, just as long as it's funtional and no cracks, etc. Thanks for the comments...

Look at storing your rod/reels overhead to keep them from being damaged (plus free-up floor space) . Hope you find a nice shell at a good price!

This may get drawn out but try not to. Years ago I had a short wide gmc. Put on shell then for storage took 2/2 material and built frame work down Both sides just out side of and above fender wells from front to rear. Cut 1/4 in ply wood to fit from floor up the took 2/2 in and cut a top to fit on it. Took 1/2 in and cut to fit floor. Carpeted all the plywood pieces. Then cut a 1/1 piece and installed 1 in down on either side so I could slide another piece of ply in if needed. Also did another piece of ply with carpet for front with lip to support ply. I could use the holes created in front and back of fender wells for storage that was hidden. Carpeted floor gave me a place to sleep and also could fit a single mattress in there if going to have to use more than one night. If sleeping 2 could slide in other piece of ply with a couple supports in middle and sleep 2 people.

I would put a shell on it. The ability to lock things and sleep in there are bonuses. However, since you have a ranger and the bed space is somewhat limited, i think the toolbox would almost get in the way. On the other side, if you haul things frequently that you cant fit under the shell, the box would be better. Good luck and good fishin

I agree. You really can't put much in a tool box for a truck that size anyway and it would take up some of the bed space. As for not being able to haul anything, I have a 5x8 trailer that never gets used if I need to haul somethig big or awkward.
