    Default F100 Problem number one through ....?


    Here may be one reason it runs like garbage:

    It's got a garbage Prime Starter.

    One of these are not like the other:

    You can see completely missing parts, and even broken parts.

    And below you can see the fixture that the above goes into, and it gots different screws holding it on! Someone been in here, and someone dint put it together right. But still, this is only a "Primer", and really only is needed during cold start. Still, when the motor is running it could be letting in too much fuel. Perhaps one reason it runs like gargage. But wait for it, there may be more!!!!

    I learned the hard way. I put a new head gasket in, and when I tightened the head bolts, what I thought was right, was wrong. I torqued it down on my bench, and what I thought was 90 degrees and the correct torque was not correct. I did the first one, seen it went to 45 ft lbs when I turned it to 90 degrees. And I found out later, 90 degrees should have put it at 51 foot pounds. Part of the reason was because I use the old head bolts. Which I know you should not use, but I did because this is an unknown engine, in which I may be completely rebuilding. But I did not want to do so without at least hearing it run. I wanted to know if there were any other prevailing issues with the motor before investing more into it.




    Anyway, I have a new head gasket installed already, and it runs the same, like garbage. But I don't have new Prime Starter yet. And I burnt up the gears on the starter motor. So this project is officially ON HOLD pending parts....

    I'm so covered up with repairs right now but when I'm not Slab I really like a problem, they are fun to me. I'm hoping to get to one of my project engines by this summer anyway. Good luck.

    I have the 24hp Honda motor in the Side x side to build when the weather gets warmer. Also have the 1976 Hobart welder that needs some carburetor work and possibly throttle body injection

    Rojo yelled at me in a PM (not). He told me I should be using the service manual (he provided earlier) when assembling the engine. I thought I'd share my response (excuse) to him! lol

    I did use the manual, but I did not have it sitting there next to me. I read it and wrote down only option one (on the 3rd step, see below)!



    I did not see the 51 ft lbs option/alternative on that 3rd step. So when I torqued the head bolts down on my work bench, what I thought was 90 degrees put it at 45 ft lbs. And that's how I proceeded.

    When I did it the second time I seen the 51 ft lbs specification on step three, and when I went to 51 ft lbs on the bolts, it was actually past the 90 degree mark, likely due to the pre-used bolts.

    lesson learned! lol

    I always think I know better. So, because I thought I'd be taking this engine apart again, and since I was only "testing" it running a little. I thought I'd do the smart thing, and not tighten the flywheel to specs. I figured "gootentight" would be good enough. After all, I broke three pullers getting that darn flywheel off the first time, I wasn't gonna go through that again. Well, well, well. It turns out, it wasn't the smart thing!

    I sheered the Woodruff Key between the flywheel and the crankshaft! doh

    The good news is, that flywheel was real easy to take off this time!

    And when you think about it, with the timing off a bit, this may be part of the reason I smoked the gears in the starter motor. Backfires while trying to start it, spinning things forcibly backwards. Don't really know, but a possibility.

    And you guys thought I knew what I was doing.
