If so it's been in the last 3 years. I believe that's when I bought my newest ones and they are great.

Quality has been questionable last few years the supreme is definitely a step up. I prefer to buy at bass pro rather than the plastic clam shell at Wally and Academy last time I opened 20 boxes to select 3 reels. Some are much smoother than others. They may have went clam shell also????
I have one that is several years old and one that is a few months old. I can't say that I notice any difference in the quality of the two reels. I like the Presidents for what you get for the money. Very happy with both of mine.

Its retailers choice, they can order plastic or box. Most big box choose plastic to limit theft of parts/reels.

They look and feel good but I just can’t believe the price now a days. $70 for the one I use to get for $50 or less.
A lot of people like them. I bought a couple at the beginning of the pandemic at Wally World for $39. Now it's hard to find them for under $60. I thought they were a good reels for $40. As others have said, the price has really gone up and at this point I think there are better reels from Daiwa and Shimano at that price point.
I took both a Pflueger President and a Daiwa Revros apart. The build quality was clearly much better in the Daiwa. A lot more plastic in the Pflueger.

About 13 years ago I bought and tried several models of Pflueger. The President, XT, and 2 Patriarchs. None of them held up. I realize that was a while back but I don’t think their quality is any better. Keep in mind I was fishing 5 days a week 12 hours a day. Pure fishing, the parent company, sells in Japan. But they don’t sell Pflugers in Japan. The reason is the quality. They know the Japanese will not buy them. Less expensive reels are sold in Japan every day. The lower end Daiwa, Shimano, Abu Garcia are all sold in Japan. But no Pflugers. You can get a Shimano Sahara shipped to your door out of Japan for about 62 dollars and some of the lower end Daiwas for about same price. Only difference is they all come with shallow spools. From all accounts that I have read and heard about the quality is not as good as say 5-6 years ago. Part of the reason for that may be the fact Pure Fishing has some ongoing financial problems.
