I so did get it running yesterday, but it won't idle. I took the throttle body off, I ordered a TPS and a Idle Air control valve which I should get this afternoon. So I start taking the stuff off the throttle body and now it's stuck. I get 5 out of six torque screws off and the last is stuck. I'm waiting got the Kroil to soak. It's broken like 4 t20's already. And the goofy thing is, it moves, 2mm one way and two mm another way. Weird that I can't just impact gun it out. Oh well, time is on my side, and so is Kroil! lol

Well, after much deliberation, I determined that I was too old for patience! I figured that screw was frozen to that metal sleeve and there was only one way to address the issue. Yes, you guessed it, BIG HAMMER!

No worries, I do plan ahead, it'll all be fine once the Amazonians arrive later today. It's all good!!!

dern, ding, dang, gosh blang thing still don't run worth an anything! Still no idle. All I can think of now is, it's the MAP thing, like a MAF I guess. One of the only things I have not replaced. So I order a MAP, a crank position sensor, and new o2 sensors. And at that point, it'll all have been replaced! Keep all your finners crossed cause I need it! lol

If you have any large vacuum leaks it won't idle at all. I'm assuming it runs just won't idle or doesn't run stable at all? Bosch invented this way of controlling engine emissions using O2 Sensors for the mix ratios. Make real sure the EGR valve is not stuck open, if it is it's like having a 1/2in pipe hole in the intake. Naturally aspirated engines can't handle a stuck EGR. I've slipped thin aluminum under the port then gently tightened the mounting bolts enough to black off enough air leak to prove a faulty EGR.

I don't think these got big ole EGR valves, just a small little vacuum hose at the one end of the valve cover connected to the intake, and a biggie on the other side of the valve cover coming from the front of the intake, in front of the air cleaner. I don't think this would cause a big vacuum leak. At least not that big that it only runs at 2000 RPM. If I drop the RPM much under 2000 it dies. More sensor replacement fun tomorrow. We'll git'r done one way or ta udder.

And the other stupid thing is, I got OBD2, and once running, the Check engine light does come on. But I get a communication error when I try to read the codes. 1996 was the first year for the XJ to get OBD2 and some on the Internet say 1996 was a "funny" year, whatever that means.

Feel like Homer yet boss? BTW, I need the name of your part supplier so I can buy some stock!

Funny year to me means the changes were being instituted and there are oddities. The 2003 F250s w/ the 6.0 diesel were the same. Early models hadn’t addressed the FICM issues till those built later in the model year.
