Gotta love this time of year. And shallow crappie.
With the temperature set to be on the warm side I'm giving the dogs a couple of days off so I can try to get some crappie!
Hit a central Michigan lake this morning for my maiden trip this year and just as I had hoped, the crappie were shallow in the what was left of last year's reeds. Picked away at them from 7am to 11am when I hit my limit. I was using 20' telescopic rod, 4' of line with no weight andva minnow on wire hook. Will hit some more locations the next couple of days then back to running the dogs Sunday.
Gotta love this time of year. And shallow crappie.
The older I get the more I realize the therapeutic benefits of fishing

Great weather to be on the water! Nice cooler full. Glad you got out and into them. When they are up shallow like that it sure is fun!

Found the crappie in the same location this morning but they were much less cooperative. I did take home 20 quality fish but spent all morning doing it. Watching crappie rush up to my bait and at the last second instantly stop, look & glide away reminded me why I quite ice fishing and took up winter pike spearing: I can force feed them the steel!
One more fishing outing in the morning on a different lake then back to the woodcock covers.
Love the cooler shot!

Made it to a local lake yesterday with unimproved access. Small lake but I've hauled some quality crappie from it in winters past. Usually very clear water but yesterday it was lije nasty coffee. Couldn't locate any fish so went back to the previous lake. Wind was picking up and most of the crappie were pushed off the outer edges of the reeds. With no other options I decided to try the most shallow & densest area of the reed bed. I couldn't target individual fish but by dipping a minnow into very small openings, I could get bit. Felt blessed to go home with 10 nice ones

I'd like to host vbottom and/or spartannation to my home water this summer. I'd like to learn more about jigs under floats and see what other techniques either of you would come up with to open more locks on this water. Feel free to PM!
