Mom's big brother, George V. "Bick" Stratton, fought against the Japanese at Bougainville in the Philippines. He made it back home with several medals for his valor. He was in some really bad combat and said many times that he was lucky to have survived. My Aunt Jewel died of cancer in 1984 and afterwards, we saw him a lot more often. He loved to come visit after my aunt died and always, ALWAYS, stayed for dinner. He loved country cooking like peas & cornbread, cabbage, cut-off corn, sliced tomatoes, watermelon, and his favorite was pecan pie. It's mine too! He always spoke at family reunions and enjoyed visiting with people. He loved to fish, drink Rolling Rock beer, and tell stories. Some were war stories; some were fast car stories; some were x-rated girl stories. I loved him.

Again, please recognize Memorial Day for what it is - a day for those have died defending our nation. I'm not posting to win an award or prize, just hoping others understand. Veterans Day is the time for those who want to post pictures of themselves, badges, etc. I have great respect to those that gave all. That's what Memorial Day is about.
