I have done this technique and it worked just fine. After I placed the split shot on my hook with pliers I just put the jig in a vise and tightened the vise to flatten the sides. I would paint the jig head and use two different size drill bit ends to paint on the eyes.

My father taught me how to do this with streamer hooks back in 1968 when I was 7 years old. I caught my first smallmouth bass on a yellow jig I made with a chenille body, a marabou tail, and the head painted with yellow model paint. I painted the eyes white with a Q-Tip, then a black eye spot with the shaft of a Q-Tip with the cotton removed. I lost it on a snag on the next fishing trip, but I'll remember it as long as I'm drawing breath.
