    Default Winter gills ?

69 degrees and cloudy today . Can you call that winter ?
I figured I’d take advantage of the warm weather while it lasted , so I grabbed a couple ultralight combos and headed to the town pond .
First combo was a 6’ St Croix Avid with a 500 Shimano reel spooled with 2# SOS line .
I caught three on this combo and and switched out to my 6’ St Croix Premier with a 500 size Kastking Zephyr ice reel spooled with 4# original P-Line .
Out of the two outfits , I preferred the Premier combo . Even with 4# line, it cast farther and easier than the Avid . Both rods are labeled fast action , but I would call them more moderate/fast , especially the Avid .
I fished almost two hours and caught eight fish including a small LM bass and seven hills from 8 1/2” to just over 9 1/4” . I was hoping for a 10 incher .
EDIT: Forgot to mention , all were caught on my woolybooger micro jigs , 1/80 and 1/64 , under a 3/4” round weighted float .
I tried a cigar shaped float and was able to get more distance on my casts , but almost every one was tangled when I got the rig in .

    gillchaser,
Man, that town pond has some nice gills in it. Have quite a few of the St. Croix Premier's , like them a lot. Congrats on a great day!

A little over years ago the town made the pond catch and release only, mainly because we were being invaded by some guys from another county with their five gallon buckets and they would take everything they caught .
Each year at our Founders day celebration the town would host a fishing contest for the kids .
When it got to where the kids were being skunked on Founders day , the town council decided something had to be done .
The town also has a vending machine that sells duck food pellets for the guests to feed the ducks , the gills get fed at the same time .
I can’t wait to see what the fish will look like next year .

I need to proof read my posts a couple of times before I hit post .
It’s been about 2 1/2 years since the town made the pond catch and release only .
The gills are growing fast sharing the pellets with the ducks that the park visitors purchase from a machine on the premises . They also eat a lot of bread scraps people bring to feed the ducks .
