They’re close. They’re known as the red breasted sunfish and carry a bit more attitude than most of the others. I catch them mixed in with other panfish and they eat just as well.
Are redbreast and bluegills the same fish? Do you fish for them the same way? Thanks Bo

Love "river reds". Sadly, none up here in upper 'Bama. They tend to like moving water so if you are in a part of the country that has them and want to target that species, go up into the moving creeks and rivers.
Two different species. Redbreast are traditionally found in moving current/water. Bluegill found just about everywhere! Bluegill also get a bit larger I believe.

Most fish species strike the same pan fish size lures. Today we caught y. perch, different types of sunfish, crappie, small bass and a white perch - all on one soft plastic lure rigged on a light jig head and all in water 4' or less near wetlands.Do you fish for them the same way?

I found some bedding a couple of years ago. Stunning colors and bigger than normal. Great fun.

I get into them each year at Nickajack Lake. Would much rather tangle with them than bluegill...they do have an attitude...much like a shell cracker. Here is video of me and my son tangling with them. The fishing starts at the 4 minute mark.

they are very brightly colored sometimes, they will attack a 1/62 or 1/32 jig sometimes. So will the stump knockers.. They can be a pain when trying to catch a bass.
Yes, don’t be too concerned when you have those nice smallies on the prowl. Good looking batch of fish!
